About The Game

Tesco Tax Evasion is a top-down 3D survival game developed in Unreal Engine 4.27. This was the 1st project I worked on at Level 3 year 1 of my games design course at South Gloucestershire & Stroud College. It is based around the theme of arcade style, and was designed with the goal of making a portfolio ready arcade game prototype in only 4 weeks.

This game is set in a universe where Tesco has taken control of the government and introduced a forced payment called the Tesco Tax. The player decided they didn’t want to pay this new tax, and was caught while shopping at their local Tesco.

This game is an auto-runner with multiple levels using randomised procedural generation to make each playthrough unique. Your goal is to pick the highlighted items on the shelves to throw at the police officers chasing you. Hitting them causes them to stop, but they will continue to spawn for the duration of the level. This must all be done while avoiding obstacles on the floor. Every time you are hit, you lose some of your accumulated tax money. Running out of money will result in a game over, but you passively gain more money over time.

The game was originally planned to have a boss at the end of the final level (this would most likely have been the Tesco CEO). I ended up cutting the boss due to time constraints as this was a shorter project than I was used to, which caused me to miss-manage my time a little.

How To Play The Game

Each level procedurally generates glowing items on the shelves, and your goal is to pick these up when nearby with the right mouse button. (Easy mode does this for you!) These items can be thrown directly behind you with the left mouse button.

Consuming items can give you a boost to a specific stat, and can be achieved by pressing E. To cycle through your available collectables, press the space bar.

To pause the game, press Esc.
